Needing a temporary reprieve from life above the surface, we made time to jump in the water at an inshore wreck earlier this week. Though the water was a nippy 50ish degrees and the viz was horrible, we had an absolutely fine time.
Nearing hypothermia, Delaney popped a fat 21 inch Tautog. It was the only fish we saw on the wreck, but with 3 feet of vizability, it could have been one unlucky fish separated from many others hiding just out of sight. In my opinion, it’s a little cold for blackfish inshore.
It was great to be back in the water and diving, excited for the return of the Stripers and Tog, warmer water, and better viz to come.
Dr. Delaney is looking a lot like Bill Murray in his groundbreaking performance as Steve Zissou in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He’d be perfect in the prequel as a young “Stevsie” cutting his chops as an unpaid intern. Get him a speedo and a glock!
Our friend Ryan who is regularly featured here in the form of his pod cast INSEAtv will be a guest on The Today show and the Early Show Tomorrow March 13, 2009.
According to the NY Post article, Ryan and crew were underwater hunting off the coast of Louisianna last June when a 12′ tiger shark singled Ryan out. (Maybe the shark could tell the difference between his camera and the spear guns everyone else was holding).
Ryann’s buddy and dive partner Craig Clasen had his back, and tried to deter the shark, the shark was persistent, and Craig was left with no option but to shoot the shark. Two hours, seven spears and a long knife blade later, the shark was dead. Clasen later said that he was deeply saddened by killing the shark but felt morally obligated to kill it after the first shot hit the fish in the gills.
Please read the article in the NY Post, and tune into the Early Show, and the Today Show tomorow to see the first hand account.
Not many people know that all internal disputes here at Squidforce Headquarters are settled on the archery range. That’s why were so stoked to see this episode kick off with Ryan wrecking a Bud Light can with an arrow. Nice shot. The rest of the epi is packed with aerial surfing, freediving, fish, dune flips and an interview with Squidforce’s spiritual apnea guide, and freediving champion, Mandy-Rae Cruikshank.
Once again, Ryan and crew have stepped it up a notch. Please enjoy InSea TV episode 7.
In the immortal words of Mandy-Rae, “Maybe you just need a beer.” Words to ponder.
Awesome video of a deep dive. Constant weight without fins.
For those of you who don’t realize, in diving, once you swim down past the first two atmospheres or 66 feet, you don’t need to swim anymore, you just sink. This really saves effort on the way down. Getting back to the surface is another story. Niki Roderick makes it look easy breast stroking through the atmospheres.
Once again Ryan has outdone himself. Look for lots of freediving action when Ryan and crew go grouper hunting in the NC.
Special interview with the intriguing Nicki Roderick, New Zeland record holder in unassisted freediving. Her record is 53 meters or 170+ feet deep. No SCUBA, no fins, no complaints!
Look for a cameo from photog legend DJ Struntz. As always the out-takes are classic.
Sauce, Stick, SarDean, Steve Harring, maybe Dickie Vocals and more skating Monmouth County some time in the early 80’s. These guys are as punk as they come.
Ryan and crew continue to raise the bar in Episode 6.
In this episode, an interview with world record freediver Martin Stepanek of Dive Fit and African Pompano spearfishing.
Dickie Vocals has me all hyped up on these things. Since breaking my most sincere thruster a couple of days ago, I have been contemplating alternate paths to waveriding zen. The Stubby is one option I’m considering. (more…)
