Sandinista Sand Spittt

Monday, May 4th, 2009 by johnee

Where have I’ve been? Hot damn…getting heat barrels down with the Sandinistas. These guys know how to do off shore winds. I just got a whiff of some fried plantains. Yummy! Yolanda knows how to hook it up. I’m on my third Tola and ready for some more barrels. Yeah we surfed Manz and Lances…Asterillo was going offffff. Have you ever been to Colorado? Not the one I’m talking about. 7 mile miracle? what? more like 7 mile pile-up…stop wasting your time on islands and get yo ass down to Centro and check out 15 miles of breezy 365 OS barrels!

Introducing the Icon Aircraft

Thursday, March 26th, 2009 by MC

Scheduled for release sometime in 2010, the Icon A5 Sport Flier will cost around $138,000 USD.

Picture it with racks added for skis and snowboards, surfboards, fishing poles, dive gear… and a cooler, don’t forget the cooler. (What are the weight constraints anyway???)

You can land it in water and trailer it behind your car.

Looks like a bitchin way to see the coast and to make those strategic strikes to Hatteras, Vermont and beyond. “South swells going to hit Block tomorrow morning, meet me at Allaire airport at 5 am, we’ll be there just in time for the incoming tide and the offshore winds”.

For more videos, information or to plunk down your $5000 deposit go to Icon Aircraft’s site.

Sharks? You dive with sharks? Are you crazy!?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009 by Heidi

Meet my Friend. His name is Fluffy

I hear this all the time. Certainly I understand from where this perception of sharks has come: JAWS, that little Hollywood horror flick. Unfortunately for sharks, their image as the big, scary bad guy registered with viewers and made many of them afraid to go near the water (the movie’s promo tagline). Heck, it made some people illogically afraid to go in swimming pools!

JAWS had the opposite effect on me in that it made me curious and awestruck. I was fascinated that something like that was out there and from that point on I set out to learn as much as I could about sharks. In the past 30+ years that I’ve been interested in sharks, a lot has been researched and published about them, but the truth is we still know very little. There are around 400 different shark species and while they share many commonalities, the differences are significant. Biologically many facts are known, but much mystery remains. Unlike the premise of JAWS, we at least know that sharks do not hunt or seek to consume humans. I also do not believe they attack people, as portrayed by the media. Sharks make investigatory bites, well, they have no hands, and regrettably sometimes that’s fatal. But there’s no evidence that sharks prefer or enjoy eating humans. If they did, they would devour the person after the initial bite. Shark bite victims usually die from their injuries, not from ending up in the shark’s belly.

So anyway, I’m about sharks. I’m not a scientist or marine biologist, although I occasionally rue my decision to choose a different path. I’m a regular person with a corporate job who is committed to following my passion. I try to spend as much time as possible in the water with sharks and talking about them on land. Along with sharks, I love writing. As shark correspondent, I hope to entertain and educate both shark and non-shark people about shark life, shark diving and the genuine threat of extinction sharks face.

I’m open to questions or topic suggestions, as well, so feel free to write me at heidi@squidforce.com or get me at facebook. I look forward hearing from you Squids.

Hey Sailor

Friday, January 16th, 2009 by MC

I often fantasize about selling it all, buying a sail boat and traveling the world’s oceans. In my fantasy, I picture a completely self sufficient boat loaded with provisions, surfboards, fishing and diving equipment and the boat is always wooden. I guess this is where it all begins…

For some reason, there’s always a Styx song being sung by a creepy pirate… (more…)

Russ Short Mainland Mex Point 1977

Monday, November 17th, 2008 by MC

Enjoy Russ Short’s styling on a three finned Bonzer at an undisclosed point break somewhere in mainland Mexico.

As water temperatures continue to cool, my mind drifts to thoughts of warmer climes. The wanderlust takes hold. Old Mexico is one of my favorite destinations for warm water reprieves. Cheap and deep, Mex is the closest, far away place.

More Mex with Terry Simms. (more…)

G-Land Java Indonesia

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 by johnee

Magical and Dangerous, G-Land on the outer reaches of Gragagan Bay Southern Java. It’s one of the most top-to-bottom waves in the world. No one lives on this protected sanctuary except a few surf camps and a host of reptiles, cats and monkeys. In August 2004 I was very lucky to visit this part of the world. I was also lucky to capture some video of my buds catching some of the most amazing waves I’ve ever seen. Enjoy the video. Music by Trans Am. Video and Editing by Johnee!

Catch and Release Shark Fishing from the Beach.

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 by MC

It’s “Prime Shark Time” in Boat Harbor. Check out Mossy, Mullet, Dave and Kris shark fishing from the beach. It’s strictly catch, tag and release, and the guys seem to have a real affinity for the animals they are pursuing. This crew of salty Aussies certainly has heaps of sack to paddle the baits out on surfboards again and again especially so close to feeding time.

We’ll see you all down at “Duff’s Bait and Tackle” for a Stubby and a laugh. Cheers!

Thanks to Glen “Great White” Wenrich for sending this video to the Squidforce!
