Aussies own

Friday, May 22nd, 2009 by Ty Torres

Australians own the entire world when it comes to the bodyboarding scene. They have an unbelievable variety of epic waves to choose from, they have the most innovative riders on the planet and as far as surfing populations go, their per-capita rippitude is incomparable.

If they could only get over their fascination with Churchill swimfins and shitty 80s music, they might actually take over the free world.

How deep can you get, really?

Andre Botha is a bit of a black sheep in the sponging world. Bursting on the bodyboarding scene at 15, he immediately made name for himself by fearlessly charging every single death spot on the North Shore he could throw his wee frame into, recklessly dropping in at the worst/best Waimea Shorebreak and Keiki had to offer. More than just a freak show, he backed up his wild abandon by winning a world title at the ripe old age of 17 and another the following year.

Unfortunately, the fast life caught up to him in more ways than one, leading him to take a hiatus from the competitive scene while he explored some of the more debacherous corners of his life. Lucky for him (and the surfing world), Dre regained his focus in recent years and has put together some of the most impressive sessions around, including a few found on the following clip from Zach Nicholas’ “The Dawn.”

Check out Dre’s first wave in here and let us know if you’ve seen anyone pull in so deep and make it. Oh, as an added bonus, there’s also some guy named “Mike Stewart” in there, too.
